A History And Explanation Of My Online Handles Since the Dawn of Internet

This theme has been going around, and since the internet is for writing about yourself, here goes.

JCVieira: I’m setting up AOL for the first time with my mom and dad. Being parents new to the internet, they understandably don’t want to give their children much internet leeway yet. This was probably a joint effort—and it remains one of the least stupid of all of these handles. If Vieira wasn’t so hard to spell, I might still have it today.

InsideOutQ: I really wanted something related to the concepts of ‘inside out’ or ‘upside down’. Why? Hard to say, maybe because I was 12 and there are no explaining what you think is cool when you are 12.

Golfhawker: My best friend at the time’s father was from Kansas. Because of this, my best friend at the time loved the University of Kansas sports teams. Because he loved these sports teams, I loved these sports teams. Because I loved these sports teams, I loved the Jayhawker mascot. I also played golf around three times a week at that point in my life. You do the math.

Figmaster: Two of my friends and I used to play Myth: The Fallen Lords online (this was a very pre-Halo Bungie creation). To confuse people, we all had the same name: Figmaster. Because we thought figs were a funny food. I suppose they are.

TheLegendofJohn: In Nantucket on my godfather’s computer, there was a golf game that my brother and I loved. Mostly we loved it because we loved computer games and this was the only computer game we had access to during our vacations to Nantucket. (Rough life, right?) In that game, you have the ability to create your own golfer. Have you ever read the book (or seen the Will Smith movie) The Legend of Bagger Vance? Yep, I named my golfer The Legend of John Vieira, and thus my most enduring online handle was born. I kind of wish that this was Legend of Zelda related, but it’s not.

EndisForever99: During my first semester of college, I was involved in the tail end of a relationship that was too confusing for an 18 year old. I also loved the Ataris, who had an album called End is Forever. I combined my love of the Ataris with my excess of emotions to create a AIM handle that I knew even then was too embarrassing to use widely.

Vieir102: Everyone should know that I was the third Vieira to attend my college.

JohnCV: Nobody can ever spell Vieira, so let us keep it out of our usernames.

Johnin3D: Everything ever is taken on Gmail and I need to use some google services. Also, this is maybe half a step more serious than thelegendofjohn

JCV: My initials, simple and properly representative. I sign up for any and all online services on the off chance they become popular so I can have this username. This strategy actually paid off for tumblr.
