Behind the closed doors of the Entourage writers room, during day one of writing season eight, this speech was given:
You guys, it’s time to write the final season and I know how we can send our show Entourage off the right way. I can’t believe this show has been going for eight years. That’s a large portion of my life that I’ve been writing for this show. I feel like these characters have become real people. These are characters that we created, that we gave feelings and emotions and families to. These characters mean the world to our viewers, they’ve practically become tangible. They live and die by what Vince and Turtle and Drama and E do. People love this show that we have lovingly written for and guided. It’s going to be hard to give this last season the respect it deserves, but I think I have an idea. I really think that this is a can’t miss idea. Remember when Vince was Aquaman and it was the top grossing movie of all time? This is going to be bigger than that. Remember all of the notable guest stars we had like Bow Wow and Mandy Moore and Gary Busey and LeBron James and Jimmy Kimmel and Luke Wilson and Sarah Silverman and Lamar Odom and Amanda Peet and Hugh Hefner and Ralph Maccio and James Cameron and Peter Dinkleage and Pauly Shore and DJ AM before he died and Snoop Dogg and Leighton Meester twice and Phil Mickelson and Eminem and Gus Vant Sant and Martin Scorsese and Bob Saget and Aaron Sorkin and Matt Damon and Mike Tyson and Christina Aguilera and Queen Latifah and Richard Branson and Mark Cuban and Lenny Kravitz and Sean ‘Puff Daddy’ Combs and Tom Sizemore? This will be more fun than all of those combined.
Ok, good. Are you ready?
Ok, but wait before you say anything though, it may seem grandiose, but please remember how important this season is. Eight seasons. That could easily be a tenth of our lives spent writing this show. Which isn’t to say anything about how this show has become such a cultural touchpoint for a certain demographic. Boys that were 17 or 18 when this show started are now men in their mid-twenties. Some have gotten married, some have finished college, some have become lawyers or firefighters or scientists, some have had boys of their own. They have become men and they want to see these characters that we have made grow up with them. We have to validate their choice to stay with us until the end. We owe it to our audience to to treat this moment with grace and dignity, with the gravitas it deserves. Do you understand how important it is to nail this final season? Good, I knew you would understand. Ok guys, sit down. Here is my big idea:
